While your wedding on Guadeloupe is sure to be lovely, the strict requirements call for more advanced planning than is necessary on other Caribbean islands. While there is no fee for a marriage license, allow yourself one month to obtain it. A blood test is required as are both parties' original birth certificates. Certificates of good conduct and certificates of single status are also required by both parties. Residency cards must be presented, as well as medical certificates, including a blood test, issued within three months of the wedding. Furthermore, all documents must be accompanied by a French translation. Finally, a "Bulletin de Mariage" and "Livret de Famille" are presented at the ceremony. Under French law, at least one of the future spouses must reside at least 40 days in the city you wish to be married in prior to the wedding. You should be aware that you will have to have a civil ceremony, usually at City Hall, to legalize your union. A religious ceremony is often also performed, but the civil ceremony, for which there is no charge, is the one that is binding. Both of you will also need certificates of good health, birth certificates translated into French and an affidavit written in French by an American lawyer certifying that you are United States citizens free to contract marriage in France and that the marriage will be valid in the United States.
