Basse Terre real estate - the exotic place to buy
The France of the Caribbean. The old saying goes: "the sun never sets on the British Empire." True in its day, but England long ago divested itself of most of its far-flung holdings. Not so France. The Gaulls continue to keep a firm grip, both cultural and economic, on many of their overseas territories. Lucky for us. The France of the Caribbean is just that...part of France. And Guadeloupe's capital, Pointe-a-Pitre, has been dubbed "the Paris of the Antilles." Though well known to the French, who enjoy tax relief when they invest "in the territories," Guadeloupe funds no Stateside marketing campaign. And it has not been easy to get there from here, though I understand that American Eagle will be starting daily service from San Juan. Guadeloupe has remained largely uncharted territory for us North Americans...and we've missed out. This is Caribbean with panache, an island with long wine lists, chic boutiques, beautiful beaches (many of them topless, another French habit), the Caribbean's highest waterfalls...but not the sky-high prices you'll pay on Martinique. Guadeloupe has always suffered the reputation of being that other island's poorer sister. In the end, I think it's been a blessing. Guadeloupe, though developed and bustling, is not overrun with tourists. Basse-Terre, the westernmost of the islands, is predominantly national park, lush and blessed with strict building codes that promise to preserve its beauty. You'll pay the most for a place on Grand-Terre's southern coast, where condominiums and homes have sprung up along the clifftops and beaches from Gosier to Saint-Francois. One villa-a three-bedroom, two-bath home at Gosier with a well-equipped kitchen, a living room, a dining room, and an independent studio, has a beautiful view of the ocean, an enclosed, landscaped garden, and an enormous terrace that's well ventilated. It's on offer for $250,000. Apartments are plentiful, and you can pick one up in Gosier for as little as $55,000. Less expensive (ironically so) is the island of rainforests and volcanoes: Basse-Terre. It's not overbuilt, much of the island is natural park, and what properties are on offer start at about $200,000.
