Basse Terre hotels - always the right choice
Hotels provide sleeping accommodations on a room/suite basis and feature a front desk for customer service. Each guest room must have a private bath and/or shower. Many hotels have additional facilities like a pool, exercise room or sauna. Hotels are usually located near other facilities. Although you'll see the ruins of a 19th-century sugar factory (including a rusting locomotive) on La Sucrerie du Comte's 5 hectares (12 acres) of forested land overlooking the sea, most of the resort is modern. The medium-size accommodations are in 26 pink-toned bungalows. Each cozy bungalow has chunky and rustic handmade furniture and a bay window overlooking either the sea or a garden. (Each bungalow contains two units, both with ceiling fans; none have TVs or phones.) Shower-only bathrooms are tiny but tidy. The nearest major beach is La Grand-Anse, a 10- to 15-minute drive from the hotel. There's a small and narrow beach (Plage des Amandiers) within a 5-minute walk from the hotel, although the swimming here isn't very good. Facilities include restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; fishing; scuba diving; snorkeling; car rental; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; rooms for those w/limited mobility. Isolated within a scrub-and-forest-covered landscape, Le Domaine de Malendure lies directly in front of the Reserve Jacques Cousteau, the underwater nature park beloved of scuba enthusiasts. Most of its accommodations are within a scattering of green-and-white bungalows (there are two units per bungalow), each with a private terrace a few steps from a beach (Malendure Plage) that's known for its nearly black (dark gray) sands. The decor of each of the accommodations includes contemporary-looking furniture imported from the French mainland, ceiling beams painted in pink, blue, or green, and tiled bathrooms (none with bathtub). A dozen units include an outside kitchenette set on the veranda. Expect a sports-oriented clientele that includes lots of scuba enthusiasts, many of whom sign up for extensive dive packages. Facilities include restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; on-site scuba facility; rooms for those w/limited mobility.
