Basse Terre honeymoon - the paradise you dream on
Leave the 21st century behind as you and your loved one explore the most beautiful rainforests of the Lesser Antilles in the National Park of Guadeloupe, deep in the mountains of Basse-Terre. Swim and picnic at La Cascade aux Ecrevisses. This waterfall that cascades into the Corossol River is just two minutes from the Route de la Traversee. It’s happy trails to you on Guadeloupe, where three easy trails run around the House of the Forest along the Route de la Traversee. Here, couples can explore the rainforest with its West Indian hardwoods, tropical chestnut trees, ferns and creepers. Carbet Waterfalls offer the fun of hiking with the beauty of three natural waterfalls as your reward. The falls are accessed via Capesterre-Belle-Eau in the village of Saint-Sauveur and the amount of waterfalls you visit depends on your hiking stamina. It’s an easy one-hour hiking tour around the Grand Etang. The natural sights include moorhen, kios and gigantic bamboos. Awesome is the only way to describe the view from Soufriere, the crater of an active volcano. Hand-in-hand, couples start from Savane-a-Mulets, hiking for about 1 1/2 hours in air redolent with the smell of sulphur. However, when you reach your destination and the clouds open up, the view is well worth the effort. Pack a picnic and head for the pebble beach of Saut de la Lezarde near Vernou in the village of Glaciere. You descend through a banana plantation and then make your way through a rainforest to a waterfall and finally to the beach. It’s a grand spot that was designed by nature with honeymooners in mind. You’ll feel like the hero and heroine in a 19th-century English novel as you and your mate stand on the cliffs at the tip of the Grande Vigie watching the breakers crash onshore. And on a clear day, the islands of Desirade, Montserrat and Antigua are visible. There are beaches of every character and color at your disposal on Guadeloupe, from the powder white sands on Grande-Terre to the golden brown shores on the leeward coast and the black volcanic sand on the west end of Basse-Terre. Take time out from your island exploring to enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the water at any one of Gaudeloupe’s quaint outdoor cafes.
