Basse Terre car rental - the freedom to move

You may want to rent a car on Guadeloupe so you can explore Basse-Terre; the loop around the island is one of the most scenic drives in the Caribbean. Car-rental kiosks at the airport are open to meet international flights. Rental rates at local companies might appear lower, but several readers have complained of mechanical problems, billing irregularities, and difficulties in resolving insurance disputes in the event of accidents. Therefore, we recommend reserving a car in advance through one of North America's largest car-rental companies: Hertz or Avis, both of which are headquartered at the airport. Many of the major hotels also have car-rental desks. You'll have to pay a one-time airport surcharge of 16€ ($21) and VAT (value-added tax) of 9.5%. Prices are usually 20% to 25% lower between March and early December, excepting July and August.Guadeloupe Pole Caraibes Airport is 6km (4mi) north of Pointe-a-Pitre. There are car rental agencies and a taxi stand at the airport. An airport bus runs about twice an hour to Pointe-a-Pitre on weekdays. Taxis are plentiful but expensive. There are taxi stands at the airport in Pointe-a-Pitre and in Basse-Terre. Larger hotels commonly have taxis assigned to them and the drivers wait in the lobby. Renting a car is a good way to get around Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre. Several agencies have offices at the airport and in major resort areas. Drive on the right; your home driver's license is valid. Renting a motorcycle can be fun on Terre-de-Haut and Marie-Galante since there are few autos on the road. If you want to travel at a slower pace on Marie-Galante or La Desirade try renting a scooter or a bicycle. There are buses on Marie-Galante every day but Sunday. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road, and there are several gas stations along the island's main routes. Because of the distance between gas stations in outlying regions, try not to let your gas gauge fall below the halfway mark when driving outside of the capital.
